People have been living in your newfound land for a very long time

I have ranted (surely) before about people who think that because they have never come across [particular thing] before they have made a unique and unprecedented discovery. And while what they may have discovered may not entirely be something that eny fule no, the chances are very strong that when they jump up and down and proclaim about their discovery, there will be some people yawning and remarking that Queen Anne died some considerable while ago, didn't they get the memo?

This possibly also comes under one of the subsections of Did Not Do The Research.

Bill Graber, recently outed as straight male posing as Paula Brooks of the LezGetReal gay and lesbian news site, appears to be in this category:

He said he had created the fictional character of Paula Brooks, a gay woman with three children from the Washington DC area, after a lesbian couple with whom he was friends had been badly treated at an Ohio hospital.

"I wanted to run a gay and lesbian news site," said Graber on why the character had set up the LezGetReal site. "I didn't think the mainstream did a particularly good job of it, and I thought that the best way to do it was to have people who were in the life, living the life, tell the story."

I find it hard to believe that there aren't already gay and lesbian news sites out there and that maybe he was just looking in the wrong places. Or somehow discounting them. Or somehow thought that no-one could possibly have had this idea before he did.
