Update: Okay I don’t know if it’s just that OPI is ridiculously easy to remove, or OPI’s remover is shit, or what but these polishes are insanely difficult to get off? Like. Wut.

I have approx. 1K of Rocky POV Grace/Rocky, with more to come. I have no idea whether it works.

Drop me a line if you’re up for beta-reading in the least persnickety, most encouraging way possible. :D

Presently, it is my bedtime, but I will follow up with anyone who's interested when I get out of bed.

  • You can get the entire bundle of manga for only $30 USD. There are also smaller bundles available for less money, with the smalles being eight volumes for only $1! All items are available as ePub and PDF.

This bundle supports Comic Book Legal Defense Fund:

Comic Book Legal Defense Fund is a non-profit organization protecting the freedom to read comics! Our work protects readers, creators, librarians, retailers, publishers, & educators who face the threat of censorship. We monitor legislation & challenge laws that would limit the First Amendment. We create resources that promote understanding of comics & the rights our community is guaranteed. Every day we publish news & information about censorship events as they happen. We are partners in the Kids' Right to Read Project & Banned Books Week. Our expert legal team is available at a moment's notice to respond to First Amendment emergencies. CBLDF is a lean organization that works hard to protect the rights that our community depends on.

With some bundles, you can pick which charity you want your donation to go to, but that doesn't seem to be the case with this one. If you scroll down on the right hand side of the Humble Bundle page, you can also find an area where you can adjust how much of your purchase goes to which organization (the charity, the publisher, and Humble Bundle, respectively), with a minimum mandatory amount to Humble Bundle as the host.

With most manga ebook volumes costing around $7 USD (sometimes fifty cents less, sometimes a few dollars more), you only need to be interested in five of the volumes available in the complete bundle to justify the cost—and the total bundle has 61 volumes! That's just over fifty cents per tankoubon.

You can find out more information about the various series at the Humble Bundle link. Definitely worth checking out if even one of the titles catches your interest, IMO.

This bundle will close in about three weeks.

I had problems falling asleep and overslept. But I’m ready a ½ hour early. I’m hanging out in the hotel room because I have plenty of time until my bus.

Had a yogurt parfait for breakfast. Took the shuttle to O’Hare. Now I’m at the “Multi-Modal” facility waiting for the bus. I had a sandwich and a Diet Coke and it cost $20! Note to self: Don’t eat at O’Hare. I’m tired but I need to stay awake until the bus gets here. I should be able to nap on the bus.

On the bus. I received a message from a neighbor that the Honda has a bunch of traffic tickets and a sign. A “welcome back” from Urbana. I need to contact the garage guy ASAP to get my driveway done.

I’m home. I’m making dinner. I’ll need to get up early to get the cats and have the Honda jump-started. I’ll get the dogs in the afternoon.

I’m washing some socks. I need to get the CPAP set up (I hope) and go to bed.

    Pandemic life
Following the closure of our favourite and the temporary closure of another, our replacement "outdoor" cafe seems to be the one at the garden centre, which is great in terms of menu, but only outdoors on a technicality. There is courtyard seating, but the garden centre is covered with a high hangar-like ceiling that's open at the sides. We're heading into winter; it'll have to do for now.

    Previous poll review
In the Siblings poll, 41.2% of respondents are the oldest among their siblings, 23.5% are the youngest, and 13.7% are in the middle (including me: 我有一个妹妹和两个哥哥). Only children make up 21.6% of respondents, and 5.9% said it's complicated. In ticky-boxes, giant pandas on penny-farthings and electric eel electricians tied for second place (37.3%), and hugs won with 76.5%. Thank you for your votes! ♥

    Reading
I've fallen shamefully out of the reading habit, so just an hour or two of Cetaganda (Bujold, narrated by Grover Gardner). I remember staying up all night reading in my twenties. What has happened to me? Clearly I need to get my Chinese to the point where I can read beginner-level graded readers, and then two birds, one stone.

    Kdramas
I have two episodes to go in To My Beloved Thief, and I'm super enjoying it. More Miraculous Brothers tonight. I need to excavate my exercise machine so I can watch ep 14 of Absolute Value of Romance.

    Other TV
Finished The Burroughs, which was fine. If anyone has thoughts about the ending, I'd be interested.

Watched some Night Train with Wyatt Cenac episodes on Youtube (Brooklyn-based standup sets, very chill). (I believe this was made for a network but not picked up, so they just uploaded it all to YT.)

An episode of White Collar with my sister; some [youtube.com profile] HowTown videos.

Conclave, a pope-election movie with Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci, John Lithgow, et al. I was lukewarm about watching this but very glad I did. Tense complicated politics, and a satisfying outcome. Would rec.

    Audio entertainment
You Can Learn Chinese (1 or 2 eps), a couple dozen Chinese Pod newbie lessons (most multiple times), and a little bit of Sinica Podcast. Also, Writing Excuses, Cross Party Lines, and Dreaming Against the Machine.

    Writing/making things
Still plugging away at my flashfic. I have three days to finish it if I want to post it in the current "Late" round at [community profile] fan_flashworks. Zero confidence I can knuckle down to make that happen, but never mind, there's always amnesty.

    Life/health/mental state things
We borrowed a friend's EV and drove up the coast to see my parents last weekend. Lovely weather, guilt-free driving, pleasant lunch. I had been nervous about my parents moving closer, but it's turning out fine so far.

I bought a new pillow, and it's only been three nights, but my neck is so much better. No more middle-of-the-night owwwws. Such a relief! And that's meant I've been able to take some longish bike rides.

A new bike path, Te Ara Tupua, opened north of the city, and it's lovely. I rode halfway along it and back (didn't allow enough time), and it was teeming with pedestrians and cyclists, with the sea right there, all blue and sparkling. It'll be interesting to see what it's like in bad weather, but in the meantime, magic.

    House
My Ikea shelves arrived, my sister helped me construct and install them, and now I feel like maybe I have too much storage? Ha. This is because I'm looking at a lot of my things, going, I could just toss that. Anyway, the stuff that was in my wardrobe where the shelves now are is currently exploded all over the room, so I have to sort it out quickly. I bought some S-hooks for my panniers (I now have one blue pannier and one orange: Bluey and Bingo!! Andrew has their counterparts and said they must be Chilli and Bandit. /in-joke for aficionados of children's TV). I just need more boxes/cubes/whatever to sort things into, and to turn some of the built-in bookcases in my living-room into pseudo-drawers. I may have spent rather too much time this week browsing Ikea and hardware store websites.

My laptop is back from the shop. The reason that it was freezing and dying every so often is that it was overheating.

And why was it overheating, you ask?

Because of the enormous clump of cat hair inside it.

several inches of thoroughly packed cat hair.

So, uh, if you have a laptop that you like to use actually on your lap, and you have a cat that likes to sit on your lap or right next to your lap while you have the laptop on it ... it might be worthwhile to crack the case open every so often and see if there is cat hair in there to be cleaned out.

I mean, I'm glad that if it had to have a problem, it was something so easily fixable.

    but also.

i wish i had figured this out myself and taken care of it before it was bad enough to need to be in the shop for a week.

I have no faith that Dymo is going to update their software to run on my Apple silicon Mac – even though their software download page gives me an option to specify Apple silicon for the version of software to download. No matter what, I always get an Intel-only app.

I really like the labels produced by my LabelManager 420P. So to protect operations from failing, I’ve decided to install the Dymo Connect software on Hinata, my retired 13" 2018 MacBook Pro running a 2.3GHz quad-core Intel Core i5 CPU. Bringing the old laptop out of retirement was a little tougher than I expected.

This evening, my younger brother R. expressed some consternation and confusion over the fact that I've got so much stuff on my hard drives, and that I've given them proper names instead of plain descriptions. They're not "2021-2024", they're Bixby Canyon and The Presidio and Napa Valley and Beverly Road, and he didn't quite understand why I want more storage space than I already have.

A little while ago, I put in a library hold for the DVD of the movie Kneecap, which is streaming on Netflix until the end of the month and might not get put up anywhere else for a while without having to pay a few dollars to rent it. Whereas if I get it from the library, I'll have it on a hard drive until time comes I'm ready to see it, and I'll keep having it if I want to watch it again. That's why I want the space.

Of course there's an XKCD strip for this. There usually is.

    Dragaera

Last week and into this one, I read Lyorn and Tsalmoth, which catches me up on the main sequence of the Dragaera series.

I started in on it a few years ago, meaning to read the books in internal chronological order. Which I've mostly managed, although there are a couple books which have different sections happening at significantly different times, and Tsalmoth takes place relatively early on but was only published in 2024.

I got interested in Dragaera after coming across references to how the big threat of the series is alien creatures, and the whole setting with gods and demons and magic might actually be science fiction underneath. From that perspective, going in chronological order was not the best choice since most of the early books (in both publishing and internal order) don't touch on that at all. If that's what interests you, I'd say start with Taltos, which is a great entry point in any case, and then you can skip forward to Issola without missing much.

Reading the whole series, though, I've been able to appreciate how Brust has improved as a writer over time. It was about at Orca in particular that I stopped and thought, this is really way better than the first couple books. And so most of the books dealing with the big ongoing potentially sfnal stuff are at the better end of the series, so there's that.

I took detours into a few of the books outside the main sequence. The Paarfi of Roundwood books are definitely not for me; no matter how much Brust has improved, I feel he still isn't quite as funny as he thinks he is. Brokedown Palace, though, might be the best Dragaera book of all. It's about the Old giving way to the New, but with sympathy and understanding for those who support the Old; and there's some action and fighting (including the banishing of a god) but overall it's the story of resolving an argument between close family members.

Of the main sequence, my favorite hands down is Vallista, partly because I like stories about the structure of time and space going wrong, partly for the look at the customs of the different houses in one section, and partly for the moment when one of the chief schemers of the series suddenly realizes that their scheme may have already succeeded some time ago.

There are two more books planned in the series, Chreotha and then The Last Contract. Reportedly Brust finished the first draft of The Last Contract a year ago, so we at least will be able to find out how he intended for the story to end somehow. But I hope he's around long enough to get both of them finished.
