onyxlynx's salient comment:
Any marginalized people striking out in a new direction successfully soon have privileged persons imitating them, also being successful, and pushing out the originators.
I came across something today which made me give this another screw of the All More Complicated ratchet.
Review of The John Lennon Letters, which includes quote from one in which, responding to the accusation about ripping off Black American music, he wrote
the one thing we always did was to make it known that there were black originals, we love the music and wanted to spread it in any way we could.... [Other UK groups of the time] and us drank and ate and slept the music, and also recorded it.
Which makes me wonder about other issues such as what audiences find acceptable, and mechanisms of distribution, and the role of commerce and marketing, in who gets promoted and heard about and in the shops/on the radio/the library shelves/etc/etc/vary according to appropriateness to field of endeavour.
[Reminded here of some Young British Writers promotion thinggy where it was clear that the list had been chosen with an eye to photo/tele-genicity.]

And still riffing off the habits and practices we don't particularly think about because they are so embedded and established thing, things that one started doing for some reason which actually no longer pertains, the equivalent of the vents at the back of a gent's jacket so that it will still sit nicely after he has been on horseback.
A thought at least partially brought to you by the upheaval in my quotidien exercise regime by an entirely new physio programme explicitly instead of, rather than on top of, what I was already doing.
