I agree. I can't believe that Winterson is only on there for her first novel, which I think is her weakest. The lyricism of her later books is breath-taking. The list seems to reward books that have been made into movies--but if it's compiled from popular opinion . . . (shuts up now as she begins treading down the elitist path).

But the TV and film adaptations were successful because they were based on good books... Still, if we redo the list removing books which became TV series or films, Trumpet by Jackie Kay is the winner.

I've leafed through that site, and it's good to see support for Mary Renault and Clive Barker. Slightly less good to see the JT Leroy page has clearly been compiled in complete ignorance of his recent exposure as a hoax concocted by a thirtysomething married woman keen to break into the teen gayboy angst fiction market:

I emailed them a while back with my vote for Renault's Charioteer, which wasn't of course on the list... I think the readers' recommendations make an interesting list, more so than the main one which seems dominated by recent books with the odd 'classic'.
