Was thinking (for some reason, the way one does), of brilliant telegram messages in various novels:

Worse fears realised darling Seth and Reuben too please send gumboots

Where there is no vision the people perish Reachfar

Better drowned than duffers if not duffers wont drown

I'm sure there are lots more examples but my mind has gone blank.

I'm failing to place the second telegram message - which novel is that from?

It's in one of Jane Duncan's 'My Friend [X]' novels, but I forget which one!

It's from My Friend My Father, I'm almost sure. Nothing makes me happier than to see references to these books in other people's writing!

I have been devouring the Jane Duncan novels in huge gulps since sometime last fall and am so delighted (and relieved!) to see that there are other people in the world who have heard of them! Every time I read one (I just finished My Friends From Cairnton) I'm astonished all over again at how much I like them.

Here via friends friends, and I hope you don't mind me commenting, but I was delighted to see the Jane Duncan reference. I haven't encountered many people who know those books. Do Monica's telegrams in same series count as well?

Twins this time - go (where?) buy outfits

(I can't find the book, so am guessing wildly.
Didm't merely magnet come into that one too?
I wish I wish that I had the Macleans and George and Tom (and "a pencil that would write red")
I borrowed them from a comical little lending library, but they wouldn't let me buy them to complete my set.

"Please go Edinburgh urgent send up complete outfit twins this time both boys am very well but flabber hyphen gasted feel am merely mere magnet."

My collection's nearly complete - I'm missing Martha's Aunt, but I have read it. A friend discovered George and Tom in one of her local bookshops and got it for me. I read them as a teen in my local library but didn't find them second-hand until I moved to Scotland 8 years ago. And yes, Abebooks, but there's something about finding them on the shelves in a bookshop.

Yes, of course - and Janet was in the West Indies at the time

Cheaper? I paid about 10 p each for my paperbacks and 50 p for my hardbacks. Admittedly, that was over ten years ago!

I have an extra My Friend Sandy and an extra (I think) My Friend My Father which I would give away to anyone who would love them.

How big are they and what would be the UK postage? Mine are very shabby and my Father is a large print and falling apart.
Apologies to oursin for this discussion in her LJ!

Have you already made arrangements for this? Because I would love them passionately -- I've been slowly borrowing them all from the Mountain View library (and other libraries when MVPL doesn't have them), but I don't own any of them, and haven't so far had luck finding them in used bookstores.

Except that Monica's telegrams tend to be less than laconic, yes. They are spectacular.

But what does Father mean about 'duffers if not duffers'?

(I've never done Susan before. It's a bit novel, in the way that something you never intend to do again is novel.)

That's Bertie Wooster to Gussie Fink-Nottle. Not as widely quoted as some, but it always strikes me funny. And thanks.
