Saturday breakfast rolls: the basic buttermilk recipe, made up with Wessex Brown and buckwheat flour.

Sweet potatoes cut into rounds, placed in layers in a buttered dish with chopped ginger, sprinkled with avocado oil, a little sugar sprinkled on top, covered with foil and baked; green beans roasted with garlic in pumpkin seed oil and splashed with balsamic vinegar before serving; courgettes and red peppers cut into strips, marinated in a mix of rice wine (could use sherry), teriyaki sauce, olive oil, toasted sesame oil, tabasco, minced ginger, crushed garlic, salt and pepper and healthy-grilled in batches; and portabello mushrooms following a recipe in Dharamjit Singh's Indian Cookery, in which they are sliced, marinated for about 15 minutes in lime juice, salt, pepper and what aromatics you fancy - in this case crushed garlic, basil, and some smoked hot chile pepper - sauted for a couple of minutes in butter, then a couple of tablespoons of water sprinkled over, lid put on, and steamed for about 5 minutes

This week's loaf: the Collister/Blake My Favourite Loaf, made up with wholemeal, spelt, and white spelt flour. V tasty.

You bake just once a week, usually... have you tried the slow-cold-rise bread recipe that was making the rounds from the New York Times? The method is to mix it, let it sit without kneading for 18 hrs or so; it develops gluten and rises in its own good time. Makes a very nice, slightly cultured-tasting loaf and is highly customizable.

I've seen that around: however, it requires me to think about breadmaking at a point of the weekend when I'm usually running around in a flap about other things, si I haven't yet got round to it.

Mmm, sounds good. How long did the sweet potato take?

About 2 hours - I started it at what was possibly somewhat too low a temperature, and increased it about halfway through (as I had to do this for the beans anyway), but sweet potato seems like one of those things that you can cook slowly or fairly fast depending on your other plans.
