I'd wish George Gissing* a happy 150th birthday, but can't really feel that he was into the concept of happy birthdays.
*Stil have a pile of his novels in the really-must-re-read-sometime pile.

I read one of his--Grub Street?--anyway, it was miserable stuff! Amusing tho' in terms of how little has changed since.

//grins Ahh, Gissing. I used to tell the kids I taught creative writing to that everyone who wanted to be a writer should be required to read New Grub Street. Alas, nobody got it.

Look, I ripped you off you inspired me! (http://the-red-shoes.livejournal.com/1136512.html) I'm going to spend at least part of today reading that Maitland book.

awww, I love Gissing. He really should be promoted into the first league. Not all of his stuff is miserablist either - The Private Papers of Henry Ryecroft (I read it a very long time ago) remains in my recollection as being full of beauty and happiness.

I also remember The Town Traveller - I think it was - as being successful almost farcical comedy. And for someone who had such problems with women in his own life, he did pretty good female characters.
