oursin: Photograph of a spiny sea urchin (Spiny sea urchin)

I have finally had access to my email at former workplace restored after A WEEK (and I thought, when it was last restored, it would be at least three months before I had this hassle again, HAH).

(People do still occasionally contact me at that address.)

How long has it been that person now i/c relevant section has been supposed to be getting some kind of handle on what I suspect is becoming my somewhat anomalous position, given that the entire institution seems to have been undergoing seismic changes?

These, I may add, I noticed (I wuz not informed) include the erasure from the server of emails over a certain age. This actually wipes out a significant archive of mine (including messages relating to Prestigious Named Lecture), and I had actually mentioned the issue of 'I have a personal archive that I would like to backup/export/ PLEEZ' (I did make moves about this at time of retirement, but relevant IT person I was in touch with left soon after I did).

There is also a certain amount of niggle around their social media team, which mentions quirky/flashy/newsworthy stuff, without adding 'and we hold massive amounts of really cool research resources!!!!' it's all a bit Cabinet of Curiosities. Was in particular pissed off last week when it was World Day for topic on which institution has World Class Important Holdings and they posted something entirely trivial and unrelated.

Last week there were a number of nigglesome and annoying things - webinar that would not let me sign in, horrid headache in middle of night, incident involving knocking water all over pillow the following night, weird issue with University of Chicago free ebook where link took me to a book I rather fancied, but it downloaded as pdf, and after I'd queried this, the link they sent me went to an entirely different book that I am not so much bothered with.

O, and the two people from webinars I did attend that I bopped off emails to that never got back, sulk. (In one case may be my personal email being deemed junk by their server?)

And this week has had the Annoying Web Project thing: and then to my response they came back in a snit wanting to Not Include The Whole Thing, so after a pause of chewing it over, I finally wrote back rather milder than some of the responses that occurred to me in the night watches saying that, in the interests of having something about person in question in their project, was prepared to work on this. Don't know if that will work, but am a bit miffed as am after all doing this free for their funded project and have already put in a fair amount of work. If at outset they had said, can you supply research for us to use might have been less miffed?

Then there is a problem which is not just mine: since the weekend WD My Cloud and similar drives have been offline and inaccessible and there is very little info from Western Digital apart from They Had An Incident. Fortunately - you all know me, I am belt, braces, and a spare belt in my handbag - I have other backups, but this is clearly creating critical problems for other people who rely on theirs.

My hip, after a while of being only occasionally troublesome, seems to be kicking up again, sigh.

I had preordered something on Amazon - as it was only available in Kindle, sigh - which published today, and my Kindle app said it could not download unless I updated, so I did that, and you know what, there is no sign that the book in question has actually downloaded even if the desktop app says it has. So I cannot run it through Calibre, moan.

I'm not sure this is quite the manifestation of Resistentialism, but things seems to be going out of order or being disobliging around here rather a lot of late.

There was the central heating thing the other month, which we had hoped was fixed: lo and behold, since yesterday the heating has been arbitrarily going on and off. Engineer booked for tomorrow, we hope this one turns up and doesn't just disappear into the wherever and have to be rebooked for several days further ahead.

Okay, we now have a new tap, yay? But before that there was that whole flood thing? (though downstairs does report that there is no damage there.)

We now have a smart meter for gas: it turns out that in order for it to actually communicate with energy companies, there needs to be some arrangement with the electricity meter (which is a different supplier, whom I have contacted anent the matter).

The fix on my new glasses - nose pads that came unglued after a few days. I have ordered some to see if it's worth trying to fix this myself before trekking down to the opticians once more.

In less material matters, I am still pursuing a charge made on my credit card for goods which never came, from a company whose onsite contact form gives an error message if you try to contact them that way, and who do not reply if you send an email to the address given on the site. I have contacted what's supposed to be the department to resolve these issues as advised via the bank's website but they are not exactly responsive themselves.

That pertains to one of several things I like which is currently out of stock everywhere on an indefinite basis (other sites said they had no idea when it will be back in stock and refunded). It is not clear with these things whether it is a supply-line problem, they have decided not to make that thing any more (boo chiz), or, as in one case, the company that produces it has got the receivers in, which I assume means it's gone out of business.

I suppose it sort of counts as happier news that a tentative approach I had a year ago that then went completely quiet to Do A Chapter has revived, except it went so quiet I did not think about it or do any preliminary reading at all.
