I suppose people will never not be interested in the Mary Toft rabbit-birth case: this however is a somewhat different take born of going into a particular archive, Mary Toft and the Radical Birth Control Movement (an archive of which I have knowledge), though I am perhaps more interested that Griffith was asking Helena Wright to ask her side-piece, Kenneth Bruce MacFarlane, a distinguished historian, for reading recommendations. But that is because the ladies running that clinic, who were trying to make birth control a respectable cause were all into all sorts of what would now be considered polyamorous configurations.

(I will not advance my critiques from my personal knowledge of the birth control movement of the 20s and 30s....)

Baptism record at Manchester Cathedral offers insight into Black Mancunian life in Georgian-era England:

When the abolitionist Thomas Clarkson gave a sermon in 1787 at Manchester Cathedral – during the city’s first mass meeting against the transatlantic trade in enslaved Africans – he saw a “great crowd of black people standing round the pulpit”.
However, little is known about Black Mancunians in the Georgian era, which makes one recently rediscovered entry in parish records at Manchester Cathedral particularly significant.

The 6‑7 craze offered a brief window into the hidden world of children:

But as media scholars who study children’s culture, we didn’t view the meme with bewilderment or exasperation. Instead, we thought back to our own childhoods on three different continents – and all the secret languages we spoke.
....
With or without access to the internet, children will continue to transform language and games to suit their needs – which, yes, includes getting under the skin of adults.

Kidz b kidz, hmmmm?

Not precisely 'history from below' - this was still the monarch's court, after all - but looking beyond the obvious players and how much there is to discover about them beyond the immediately apparent: Dwarfism, Institutionalisation and Marginalisation at the Court in Early Bourbon France:

I aim to demonstrate through my new Transactions article that a meticulous examination of archival sources can reveal far more about the lives and activities of people with dwarfism – and marginalised people in general – than the archive’s apparent silence initially suggests.
At the same time, I hope this study can serve as another example, alongside my book on Louis XIII’s court, of the rich potential in an approach to court studies that de-centres the monarch, his ministers and absolutism to better understand the court – its institutions and its culture – in its own right.

The man who invented the Tube: or rather, had the idea and campaigned for it, died shortly before the opening of the Metropolitan line, which may have something to do with his absence from the annals.

In less cheerful news, (invasive, predatory) goldfish are back: either they've been lurking in the depths, or somebody has ignored the requests Not To Dump Your Goldfish Here, Please. (I only spotted a few, to be fair, rather than the shoals there used to be.)

In other environmental intelligence, if you are Concerned About Bees and biodiversity, don't set up your own hive of honey-bees:

[H]oneybees are livestock, like pigs and chicken. And just as keeping chickens won’t save wild birds, honeybees won’t save wild bees, and in some cases could be contributing to their demise. If you want to help a variety of bees, the best way is to plant flowers that bloom sequentially from early spring to late autumn – even if you only have a window box or pots on a patio. Avoid gardening with chemicals, and leave areas undisturbed where solitary bees and bumblebees can nest.

On Friday I virtually attended a talk on Polyamory in the USA, History of. Which only went back to the 1960s or so and referred to the Sexual Revolution, Hippies, etc.

And I was wondering what about all that Free Love in the 20s (years ago I was in conversation with somebody who was doing a PhD on a whole group of Greenwich Villagey types who were trying to Transform Marriage, not entirely successfully), or was that all annihilated during the 50s as probably Red?

And then later I have thought - following some allusions on Other Social Media appertaining to The Burned Over District etc - surely the C19th saw some way radical ideas frothing around, and in fact they came up in that not very good book on Comstock I read recently.

I.e. maybe more of a recurrent tradition there? though somebody raised an interesting question right at the end while I was logging out about the significant presence of female movement voices in the later C20th.

This is possibly a rather jaundiced view of current US polyamory: Once the province of utopian free-love communities, consensual non-monogamy is now the stuff of Park Slope marriages and prestige television.

However, this picture of privileged frolicing in the hay resonated somewhat with this: A new generation of sexually adventurous middle-aged women are exploring kink and fantasies without shame, according to the founder of one of the UK’s largest sex-positive communities.

Admittedly these occasions sound not unlike the parties described to me by 70s Swinger:

Women are consciously in the driving seat at Killing Kittens events – men, known as Toms, are not allowed to attend without a woman, and when the fun gets started, only women can make the first approach.

except that according to him (and indeed a lot of the literature about 'swinging' from that period) there was a lot of lady-on-lady action happening. And honestly I am wondering about the (implict) heteronormativy of this enterprise and do they really find a sufficient quotient 'free from toxic masculinity'.

It also makes me think back to some of the 'free-love' types in the 1920s, who seemed to me to be coming possibly less from a utopian sex-reform tradition than trying to democratise a kind of Edwardian (and longer) house-party trad of partner-swapping.

Whereas at another level entirely, unfortunate couples find themselves stuck together because they cannot afford to divorce: Financial pressures have led to postponement of 19% of divorces, involving 270,000 couples, Legal & General claims.

Singapore man sues woman for just wanting to be friends, not partners. She clearly went further than most people would think necessary in trying to deal with this delusional creep:

The woman first met Kawshigan in 2016, according to court papers, and problems began to arise in 2020 when they became “misaligned” about how they saw their relationship. “While the defendant only regarded the claimant as a ‘friend’, he considered her to be his ‘closest friend’,” the court papers say. The defendant requested for their interactions to be reduced, the judgment said, which caused displeasure to the claimant, who felt this would constitute “taking a step back in the[ir] relationship”. The defendant emphasised the need for boundaries and urged him to be “self-reliant”. The judgment said the woman participated in counselling for 18 months after Kawshigan previously threatened legal action against her, alleging that he had suffered emotional trauma after being told she regarded him only as a friend. “While the defendant had hoped that the counselling sessions would help the claimant come to terms with her decision to not pursue a romantic relationship with him, this was not the result.
What with the doing counselling rather than, I don't know, blocking all contacts and faking her own death?

Back in the day (it was only repealed in 1970-something), Breach of Promise actions could only be brought by the woman, on account of (okay, by 1970 this did look weird), getting married had substantial value in a woman's life and being thwarted by Some Cad had material consequences: meant she might have missed other opportunities and lost the marriageability window, suffered reputatational damage, costs of buying trousseau, etc; things which did not pertain to Blokes.

In further 'Menz? Delusional or What?' there was the guy who got into a snit when his wife failed to introduce him, who had never flown a plane, as a pilot at a do with her work colleagues. His reaction is not, one feels, going to do her much good in her professional setting.

Conversely, and springing off from that, on not giving credit for actual achievements:AITA for wanting my husband to say I am an author? because it is not her dayjob:

I am 31, I wrote 7 books and 6 of them are published. I have 4 publishers in Canada. I sometimes do book fairs and presentations. And have a check once a year for each book. Anyway, my husband said that I am not an author, because I do not do that for a living. And that he would be upset if someone said they were and later on learned it was just a hobby.
Like there have not been plaints all over social media about the rotten rewards of authorship except for the tiny percentage of top earners and that for most they need some other more reliable income stream.

Okay, we have all had the experience of taking something out of the wardrobe and oops, stain, unwearable, but most of us will then put it in 'for washing/dry-cleaning' basket/sack/pile rather than throwing it out: You be the judge: should my husband stop throwing away his ‘old’ clothes?:

I don’t really have the time to sort through my shirts and trousers every morning, seeing which ones are stained and which ones aren’t. I’d rather keep a collection of entirely clean clothes.
Do we think that formerly Mummy, or more likely Nanny, took charge of this task and ensured that Young Master's wardrobe was always furnished with pristine garments?

I thought this was interesting, for certain meanings of interesting: ‘They don’t want you to be a sex worker – they just want to pay you for sex’:

“The stigma of being a John doesn’t get talked about as much as the stigma of being a sex worker, but the idea of being a John is seen as desperate and they like to think of themselves as people that can access young hot pussy because of their wealth and status. It’s an ego-affirming thing. The fantasy is that it’s old-fashioned chivalry.”
(Maybe they want to feel that they're in the position of the millionaire fiance in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes of whom Marilyn Monroe as Lorelei Lee says a girl like I could have any millionaire, she chose this one?)

Further dodginess in Effective Altruism movement: These Women Say It Has a Toxic Culture Of Sexual Harassment and Abuse - I must say, those descriptions of exhortations to join in 'polyamory' sound like good old polygamy to me? and a lot of pressure to 'keep any call-outs in-house to preserve the good name of the movement'. Ahem.

oursin: Painting of Clio Muse of History by Artemisia Gentileschi (Clio)

Spotted lately on Twitter, but did not engage, somebody (who was I think getting their head handed to them, yay) claiming that polyamory had zero to do with Romance, unlike monogamy, that epitome of Teh Romantickal.

*Larft hysterically in historian*

Thinking of all those looong centuries in Western Europe (in order to confine this discussion to a society in which heterosexual monogamy was technically the hegemonic norm) in which marriage had very little to do with luhrve.

In fact so little to do with amorous passion that the medieval Courts of Love decreed that l'amour courtois could not possibly be A Thing betwixt spouses, 'twas flyin' in the face of nature.

And even in these days here, we feel that over the longer term, monogamy involves certain trade-offs of high romantic passion for the kind of bureaucratic organisation and scheduling that person was deploring as characteristic of polyamorists, because living a life together, if romance segues into marriage or at least cohabitation, and maybe offspring, and having of individual lives beyond coupledom, is going to involve a certain amount of administration. (And that's not getting into the territory of those couples still in the earlier stages in which one writes into advice givers that t'other expects them to do All The Arranging, or Taking Care of Financial Matters, and how this is somewhat taking the shiny glow off...)

Somehow I feel this here is somewhat related to this idea of The Romantic: this week's 'You Be The Judge' in The Guardian: should my fellow bridesmaid dial down the hen-do plans?, and given that fellow bridesmaid expresses her side of things thusly:

My philosophy is that a girl’s wedding is the most important day of her life. We need to be there as much as possible for Alisee because she will only do this once. Perhaps it’s because I’ve been through it myself, but I don’t think Alisee’s demands are crazy. It’s just what you do when you get married; you distribute responsibilities among your bridesmaids, and ask them to plan your hen.... I’m supporting Alisee and suggesting additions that will make the hen do extra special, like professional catering and a lovely villa with a pool.
She most certainly should.

Okay, diff'rent strokes for diff'rent folks, but really: in this century, 'a girl’s wedding is the most important day of her life'? - (not to mention 'only do this once' /cynicism) - one would hope that there would be opportunities for other important days? In particular something that is becoming less of a significant rite de passage for the celebrants, who have probably been living together for yonks and may even have children, and more of a conspicuous ritual display?
